What it Really Means to be a Teacher

Few are the ones who take into consideration the many responsibilities that come along with becoming a teacher. Many teachers, beginners or experienced, think that teaching simply means having a BA which qualifies you teach the material. But that is not the case. Teaching is both an art and a science. Both aspects should be targeted to be a successful teacher. So, what does it take to be a successful teacher? A lottt!!
First you should lighten up! Many teachers enter classes having in mind that they are the solo power of authority. They reflect this by their actions and this is when the problems begin. The teacher struggles to keep control of her class in any way. She starts yelling and students yell back. As a result, the class turns into a battle field. Things will get out of hand and the whole year will become a nightmare for the teacher.
Other than lightening up, a teacher should be patient. Patience is the key to success. As teacher, you should be aware that every class you enter is representative of different beliefs, feelings and thoughts. You have students from different backgrounds and maybe different cultures. Each student thinks in a different way, has different needs and intentions. A teacher should take this into account and her job will be much easier. I'm not saying that if you are patient you will never face any problems, but it really does lessen them.
Furthermore, students love a teacher who has a sense of humor. It never hurts to have a joke with your students once you have set rules straight and students can differentiate between work and fun time.
So, personality has a drastic effect on teaching. If you are able to build a good relationship with students, you have started off with a good teaching career. There are many other points that the teacher should work on as preparing the material properly and having it adhere to students' needs. Being very clear on your objectives and instructions is also a very important point that leads to a well managed class if tackled properly.

  1. Teaching requires a lot of work and seriousness and commitment from the teacher, and a teacher must be aware of the different responsibilities that she holds upon her students. Teaching requires patience as you mentioned and if a teacher doesn't have this characteristic then she would never be able to improve her work and the students' achievements. If the teacher doesn't provide the suitable and encouraging environment for the students then they won't be able to learn in a good way and acquire all the skills. Thus teachers- to- be must be aware of the importance of the career they are going to handle with and try to give their best in the class.

  2. To be a professional teacher it is very hard and requires a lot of practice, teachers should believe that they are the key of having a successful society. Students get influenced by their teachers, when the process gets wrong this would implement a negative attitude in students’ minds toward schools and education in general. Since students are the one who will change and enhance our society, the process of influencing and motivating them shouldn't get wrong. Teachers must always keep themselves updated it is not sufficient to have BA without experience and without being knowledgeable about the new things like technology. Teachers should always attend workshops and training sessions to improve themselves. Also teachers should have characteristics other than having knowledge.

  3. A professional teaching qualification does not make you a professional, it doesn't guarantee that the service you provide is professional one. hence, being a professional is not that easy and it requires many roles to be done well.
Starting from the first day of school, the teacher should create a good first impression to gain the trust of both students and parents. Being on time is another important thing for teacher to be professional, so teacher should arrive school before the first bell rang to be more mentally prepared. Also, the teacher should come class being well prepared, designing a helpful lesson plans to make sure that all the necessary materials and skills will be covered, this can help in presenting the materials professionally, therefore, teachers should be always up to date and plan ahead. Another thing is the charge of the class room management that should be taken by the teacher so that the teacher is the one who is responsible to control misbehaviors in the class.
A very important thing is to treat students with respect and build a personal relation ship with the students to know them more, their learning styles, their strengths and weaknesses... which help in implementing the suitable ways and techniques to fulfill all of the students needs, this way the teacher can take the interest of every child and can influence their attitudes to ward the subject.
All of these are considered as characteristics of a professional teacher.
